Teaching the Social Studies concept, Natural Resources

  1. It ws really a pleasure viewing your lesson in this space. I am sure that your classmates were able to identify some of the strong effects in your lesson. I will mention a few in this post.

It is important that students are made aware of what they are going to learn in any lesson. You did that quite well by telling them that they were going to focus on Natural resources today. Timing students for every task given was a great idea as this helps them focus on completion. Trish, your whole demeanour while teaching was one that many teachers need to emulate; you articulated quite well and express yourself so that your meaning was clear to the students.
Engaging students in acitivites with the prescribed text is commendable and getting them to brainstrom and share their ideas is also highly encouraged in the content area classroom. These as well as those identified by your colleagues seem to be some of your strentghs.

  2. It is important however to note a few areas that you need to work on.In terms of planning, the format used in designing the lesson plan was not all consistent with that prescribed by the Social Studies department. Objectives had to be written as Knowledge, Skills and Attitude and that you did not do. Some other pertinent information such as Subject, class, No of students were missing from the plan. The generalisation which students are expected to form at the end of the lesson was also left out. there was no Concluding activity.
Regarding the delivery, allow the students to tell you what they remembered from the previous lesson rather than you telling them, whenever you are activating students' prior knowledge, In other words, let them do the talking. It is also important to time students for assigned tasks because they need to focus on completion. Avoid talking to the students while you are writing on the board. You need to face the students when you are either giving instructions or explaining/demonstrating a concept. I also thought that students should have been given more opportunities to identify resources found in their immediate environment and to classify them as natural or man made. You just spoke a bit too much when you could have asked students a few relevant questions that would generate rich discussion on the topic.
Do you have comments based on mine?

Mnay times things may not work out as we plan, but that should not deter us from moving on.
As we have noted before, this is a learning experience for all of us and I recommend that you take the criticsms well and use them to improve your future practice.

Also it was nice working with you to develop the unit plan,; study hard!
